For the Love of Horror

Why horror?

Life itself is grim and terrifying enough. Here is a short, off-the-cuff list of actual horrors that pretty much anyone would recognize: losing a loved one, suffering from a debilitating mystery illness, facing a highly uncertain future, dealing with a sick child, having to realize someone you have known all your life is actually a harmful, dangerous lunatic. All of these are the plots for really good horror movies. But as we all know are also, unfortunately, facts of real life.

So why horror?

I actually don’t know. It is not something I can quite put my finger on. All I know is that after a really chillingly good horror novel, game, or movie, I feel more hopeful, more encouraged about my hold on life and what I can do with it. Crazy? Maybe. I sure as heck ain’t no psychologist.

Maybe I can articulate it better after a few more horror movies this week…
